Lots complain about "starting with flare", well with experiance, perception and other "smarts" rolled in ...look at what is -the- most dangerous weapon to use against the pred? The light is. This will bring many marines and rockets. The Flare is just one source.
Oppions differ, but time will show you, predator just about always runs from light.
(I am reffering to smart ones, those that live longer than average!:)
In practice, most 'hunters' chuck a flare in front of them selves then stand on it and look around and wonder.. "duh, is it friday yet?" or "If its thursday, this must be Stoggos.."

Ok, look at Machine gun.. you start off, pred's right there so you open up with it. What happens? YOU light up like roman candle from the mussel (sp?) flashes. Predator has no trouble spotting you! You got any lite to see by? No.. the mussel fire does not thro lite with the shots. The simple blaster does!
Now look at the shot gun.. it has same flash as the machine gun, but only one per second (aprox). Useful? ..not.
Only the basic Blaster is of any use as it throws lite with its simple shot. Damage, all 3 are the same over time. The machine gun potentionaly has more hitting power but a fair percentage misses too.
Its not 'til you get to the SuperShot gun do you have any decent hitting power. And 2 close shot will take it out! The predator would have as much chance to live as a fly in a fan factory!
What, you figure yer gunna take on the predator as soon as you spawn? Nope..
Chances are 1 in 10 there is a better weapon within 4 secs of where you spawn and a flare will make the predator dance further or give it a greater reason to pause while you get it.
